Lary Carlson, Founder

We are sad to announce the recent passing of the founder of our firm – Lawrence (Lary) Carlson.  Lary went to rest with the Lord on June 13, 2015.

Lary started Carlson Advisors in 1974 when he left the firm of (what is now) Clifton Larson to go out on his own.  At that time, Lary probably intended to focus primarily on his real estate development ventures (he formed Woodland Development at the same time).  However, his CPA firm clients had other thoughts in mind. Due in large part to Lary’s passion for helping those clients and building up his employees, the firm grew steadily.  Today, thanks in large part to Lary’s vision and business philosophy, we have six separate offices with close to seventy-five employees.

Lary shaped the very core of our firm and his influence is rooted in every fiber of our practice.  He humbly established the essence of what it means to be a true professional at Carlson Advisors.

Under Lary’s leadership we grew as professionals and as human beings.  His passion for our clients’ well-being set standards for delivering superior professional services that went far beyond client expectations.  Lary’s work ethic and integrity encouraged us to be true and genuine in our approach.  His caring and compassion helped build pride and confidence in our abilities and encouraged us all to grow far beyond what we thought of as our own capabilities.  Whether you were a firm client, an employee, or one of his business partners, when Lary came alongside of you, you knew he was in your corner and that he was going to do everything he could to help you succeed.

At Lary’s memorial service, there was a celebration of Lary’s life.  The focus wasn’t as much on what Lary accomplished in his life (which was truly astounding) but how he lived his life.  He lived with passion and enthusiasm that spilled over onto those he encountered.  He truly cared for the wellbeing of family, friends, employees, clients and so many more.  Lary accomplished much in his life but, he gave away even more.  He gave honor to God for his blessings and took little credit for his own personal success.  This humility washed over all of us who were fortunate enough to be part of Lary’s life.

We thought we would leave you with the guiding words that Lary shared with us many times over the years.  These words frame our philosophy at Carlson Advisors and ring true for us today as much as they did over all the years we were blessed to know and walk with Lary Carlson.

“Serving our clients is considered a special privilege.  As professionals, it is expected that we are properly educated and informed.  However, our profession is particularly dependent on two virtues: trust and concern.  The client must feel a high degree of trust.  That trust must be earned.  We also must genuinely and sincerely care.  That must be proven.  There is no substitute for deep, genuine concern for the client and his or her business success.”
